Week 4

Grade one parents,

This Tuesday we had a fantastic time at our school picnic. Thank you to all the students and parents that attended.

This week in grade 1 we have been finishing up our 5 senses activities and starting our MyPlate healthy eating inquiry. We sorted some of our favourite foods by grains, protein, dairy, vegetable, fruit and food we should try and keep off our plate.

In math, we have been working on our number bonds, and addition stories. The students enjoy making stories out of their equations.

In language, we finished our first acrostic poem about things that we like. Each student presented their poems to the class and provided feedback to help each other improve for our next poem.

We have a new student starting on October 1st.

Kind regards,
Sara Matthews

Colorful birds

This week, Grade 1 students learned a Japanese traditional song, "Akai tori kotori".
It is on their textbook and they  liked singing this song.
JAL students can learn how to say colors in Japanese with this song.

They also started Japanese reading homework this week.
When they did the homework, please write your signature on their reading card.
If they have someone to read for, they are very motivated to read and earn confidence by reading fluently.
It also helps them to understand the contents of the story.

Week 2

Dear parents,

This week was a great week because it was Suisha festival!
The students of first grade have been working with other JIES grades and Jinsho to create different games for the festival.

On Friday, they were able to go around the different groups and play all the different games. They had a great time making new friends from Jinsho and working with older and younger friends from other grades of JIES.

Kind regards,
Sara Matthews

Week 2

Dear parents,

This week we started looking into our first line of inquiry: how the body works. We started by deciding if our favourite foods are healthy or unhealthy. We will be investigating to see how many we got right!

The students have been learning about how 5 senses and how different parts of our body help us to survive. The students have been working well in groups and class discussions, and are being introduced to working independently.

Japanese Class

Hello!
I am Kayoko Kobayashi, the Japanese teacher at JIES.
I would like to let you know what Grade 1 students learned in my class.
Japanese class comments will be written bi-weekly.

This week, Grade 1 students started their Hiragana practice book.
Most of them already know Hiragana, but it is a great opportunity to practice again while considering the balance of the character and stroke orders.
They also enjoyed singing Otsukimi (Japanese autumn festival) songs!
