Exchange Videos

This term we have been learning about the importance of communication and how it has changed over time.

This week, Grade 1 made videos to share with a school in Arlington Heights, IL USA.
Here they are!

We watched the videos they made about Japan for us this Friday afternoon. We really enjoyed them all!

We made a graph about our favourite Japanese food. The choices were Eel, Octopus, Sushi, Cream Puff, and Onigiri (rice ball)

The following videos are about inventions that we are learning about and have made. They also show our classroom and what we eat for lunch!

Week 26

Dear Grade 1 parents,

Thank you to all the parents who made a visit to see Grade 1 on Parent's Day. It was a great success!
We shared our inventions through a video presentation and then shared them in our classroom to our class and parents. This way we were able to get feedback about how we did and how we can make our invention work better next time.

For Language Time, Grade 1 were read picture books that Grade 4 made for us. They had made books about how to use energy responsibly. This was an important time for us as this will be part of our learning for our next Central Idea.

For math, we finished our graphs and shared them with our parents. We got lots of information for our graphs from our parents!

Have a great week,

Kind regards,
Sara Matthews

Week 25

Dear Grade 1 parents,

I hope you are all having a great week.
This week in math we have been finishing up on our graph work, and we got to make up our own questions and collect the data from other classes.

In language, we have been working on our literacy centres and students have started to implement the writing process into their work on writing station.

In music, we have been working on tempo. Students are playing a choice of three instruments to the song Mr. Sun. They have chosen to play slow, medium, or fast. They shared their performance yesterday and next week will do the final performance for us!

In our how the world works inquiry class, students have been working hard on creating their own invention. They will be sharing this on Thursday at our invention convention for Parents Day after the Celebration of Learning.

We also have done a series of experiments about push and pulls. We learned that push and pulls use muscle as a source of energy. We have been working on predictions in both language and science so we predicted what would happen and then tested it out to see if we were correct!

I hope to see you all at Parents Day and Celebration of Learning next week.

Kind regards,
Sara Matthews.

Days of the week in Kanji and Hiragana

Grade 1 students have been practicing how to say and write days of the week in Kanji.
They are so confident about how to say the days of the month since we have practiced a lot during the unit of Where we are in place and time.
I am so happy that Grade 1 students really enjoy learning Kanji.
Although sometimes it is difficult for them to follow the correct stroke order, students are helping and teaching each other how they can write Kanji nicely.

Week 24

Grade 1 parents,

This week was a busy week with Numeracy and Science Week and our trip to the National Museum of Nature and Science!

During the field trip, we got to look at different forms of energy and see some inventions that impact our daily lives.

In language, some of our students have started looking at non-fiction books and learning how to record their learning.

In math, we went on a short field trip around our community to see how energy is being used. We made a picture graph to document all of the energy we found.

For our How the World Works unit, we have started our group project. This is a practice run for our summative task. Students have been working in groups to find a new and improved design for our pencils. Students discussed the problems they have with their pencil and then came up with ways to fix it. They will present their designs on Monday. Then, we will be off to create our own inventions!

Have a great weekend!
