Shiritori game!

Now Grade 1 students can write Hiragana very nicely, they can play Shiritori!
Shiritori is a Japanese word game in which the players are required to say a word which begin with the final kana of the previous word.
They were so excited to play the game and enjoyed writing the word they like.

This week, they also started taking a Hiragana test.(Japanese spelling test)
It was so good to see them trying to write as nice as they can.

Week 8

Grade one parents,

This week is literacy week! I was happy to see that almost all students dressed up on Tuesday for our book character day! We had a reading at the school assembly where Ms Raciti and myself read Cat in the hat. The students really enjoyed the day.

We have also been doing guided reading with the whole school, so everyone gets to meet and read with someone new!

We have been practicing our poems really well and will be performing them today for our summative assessment. They will also be in our poetry reading area tomorrow for you and your child to read through. Please feel free to read the other students work and talk to everyone!

See you tomorrow,

Sara Matthews

Week 7

Grade 1 parents,

This week we have started our healthy me and unhealthy me posters. The students are also working on their poem in response to our question: How can we be healthy? (ESL pull-out students will have an anecdotal sentence in response to the question).

The students have also been working on creating their own math questions and stories for addition and subtraction. Today they started sharing their work with the class. The students had so much fun working out all the questions!

Grade 1 students have also been working together with grade 4 to make posters, announcements, cards, and decorations to get the school EXCITED for literacy week! They have shown great co-operation, caring, and commitment to their projects.

See you next week at the Celebration of Learning and Family Fun Day! This will start around 2.20pm next Friday.

Have a good weekend,
Ms. Sara

Week 6

Dear grade 1 parents,

This week we have been doing some fun things!
We started on subtraction in maths and students have been really interested in making up their own questions to quiz their friends.

We finished My Plate and wrote about why we put the foods on our plate. We had some great answers and everyone tried their best at writing on their own.

We have been finishing up learning about our body and how it works!

We also finished our school acrostic poems and the students will be bringing home a copy over the weekend. We will be starting our healthy me poem next week for our Celebration Of Learning!

Some students also took ACTION and realised how much Coke was being consumed everyday in our community. They want to tell everyone about how much sugar is in Coke. We will be making a poster to send out to our friends in the school to share our knowledge.

Have a great long weekend,
Sara Matthews.

Small tsu(つ) sound

This week, Grade 1 students have been learning how to use small tsu() character.
They learned by clapping their hands and they found it very interesting.
It helps a lot for students to know how it works.
For example,ねこwith 2 claps and ねっこ with 3 claps.

They also read the story "Hana no michi".

On the reading day, everyone read it very nicely and some of them even memorized the story and said it without reading the book!

Week 5

Grade one parents,

This week we have been focusing on the impact of our healthy or unhealthy choices.
We have been looking at MyPlate and the food pyramid to decide which foods we should be eating to help us grow big and strong. We have been looking at the human skeleton, learning about healthy choices for our bones and teeth.

We also did our own little science test! We found out what Coke is made out of! We boiled it down until all that was left was all the sugar! We talked about what the impact this would have on our body and the choices that we could make to have healthy and strong teeth!

In maths, we have been making up our own addition stories for each other to try and solve - next week we will start on subtraction!

Kind regards,
Ms. Sara
